I believe this is the most important aspect of Object-Oriented Design (OOD) and Programming (OOP). I also believe this is the most disregarded. It is disregarded because it is not fully understood. It is my opinion that this aspect of OOP is misunderstood because beginner programmers focus in learning WHAT encapsulation is, and not why it is important or needed. This article aims to explain why encapsulation is important and how to achieve true encapsulation. Introduction My first piece of advice: Search the web. There is a ton of information that is available to you on the Internet. However, beware where you go for information. There are many places with bad information as well. For this topic, the safest source of information is the Oracle The Java Exceptions Tutorials . Starting with the basics, the first thing to do is determine whether or not you need the custom exception class to begin with. We are going to assume we need to handle an exception that it is not clearly represented already in Java. To create a custom exception class, we must use a name that it is meaningful. Typically, the exception class is named after a process or a class name that will throw the exception. When determining the relationship between object at design time, it is easy to succumb to the habit of using inheritance; simply because it is easy.  In a language such as C++, it is even easier to do so because the language supports multiple inheritance. Specialization, Generalization, and Abstraction

A question was raised on LinkedIn (you can follow me there: https://www.linkedin.com/in/hector-fontanez ) that got me thinking and I decided to blog about it. I am going to start by defining what generalization means in Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) and Design (OOD). Generalization in OOD implies that a specialized (child) class is based on a general (parent) class. This, in turn, implies a "is-a" relationship. When you analyze the object types and their relationships as depicted in the image above, from left to right, it goes from very general to more specific. You could say that an Animal "is a" more general form of Dog, of Canine, and even than Mammal. Likewise, a Canine "is a" more general form of Dog. If you analyze it from right to left, the opposite happens: it goes from more specific to more general. Put in other terms, the type gets broadened. Therefore, you can still refer to dogs as canines, mammals, or even animals.

Using Apache POI to create MS Office documents

A question was posted on LinkedIn which caused me to get out of my shell and post again. After all, I know all too well how frustrating it is to try to get something to work and not being able to find any meaningful examples on the web (YES... we have all grown fond of Google to find examples and get lazy researching topics, but that's life...)
